On October 30, 2026, Anthropic renamed its two top Claude subscriptions and removed the short-window limit on the more expensive one. Max 5x is now simply Max, still $100/month. Max 20x is now Ultra, still $200/month. Existing subscribers move to the new names automatically and need do nothing; no price changed. [Anthropic announcement via @claudeai on X, Oct 30, 2026; Claude Help Center, "What is the Ultra plan?"; Anthropic pricing page, read Oct 30–31, 2026]
The one substantive change: verified Ultra accounts no longer have a five-hour limit. Anthropic is removing it starting with most existing subscribers. Newer accounts keep a temporary limit until they are verified — verification is automatic, based on account and payment history, and exists to prevent fraud and abuse. Max keeps its five-hour limit. Pro and Free are untouched.
The headline numbers
| Plan | Price | Five-hour limit | Weekly limit | Monthly API credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro | $20/month ($17 billed annually) | Yes | Baseline (1x) | Not listed |
| Claude Max (was Max 5x) | $100/month | Yes — 5x Pro | 5x Pro | $100 |
| Claude Ultra (was Max 20x) | $200/month | No, for verified accounts | 10x Pro | $200 |
What did not change: every price; the weekly limits; Fable, the top model, which remains capped at half the weekly limit on both Max and Ultra; monthly-only billing for Max and Ultra. The web prices above are the subscription prices; mobile app pricing may differ.
Read the old name correctly: 20x was never the weekly allowance
This is the part most coverage will get wrong, so get it straight before you react. When the top plan launched, its single limit was a five-hour window set at 20x Pro — hence "Max 20x." Anthropic added weekly limits in August 2025 and set them at 10x Pro, while the five-hour limit stayed at 20x. The new Ultra page states the allowance as 10x Pro per week, and Anthropic says the weekly caps are unchanged.
So Ultra is not a cut from 20x to 10x. The 20x window is gone because the window itself is gone for verified accounts; the weekly total was already 10x and still is. Anyone reporting this as a halving is comparing a five-hour figure to a weekly figure.

The per-unit math: same $20 per weekly Pro-equivalent, different pacing
| Plan | Price | Weekly allowance (Pro-equivalents) | Cost per weekly Pro-equivalent | API credits | Credit value as share of price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20 | 1x | $20.00 | $0 | 0% |
| Max | $100 | 5x | $20.00 | $100 | 100% |
| Ultra | $200 | 10x | $20.00 | $200 | 100% |
Two things follow. First, Ultra costs exactly twice Max and buys exactly twice the weekly volume — the ladder is flat at $20 per weekly Pro-equivalent, so the choice between Max and Ultra is about how much weekly volume you need, not about a bulk discount. Second, the API credits (in place since October, now listed under the new plan names) still return the subscription's face value in API spend: $100 on Max, $200 on Ultra. The credits cover the Claude Platform, Console, and Agent SDK when run with a linked API key — they do not raise the app allowance, and they are a separate meter from it.
The real change is pacing, and pacing is worth real money to exactly one kind of user. Under the old two-limit system, a heavy session could hit the five-hour window and force a wait even with weekly allowance untouched — the midday stop that power users complained about. A verified Ultra account can now burn its weekly allowance in a single long day. Nothing about the week's total changed; the shape of the week did.
What it means for you
If you're a heavy user (the person this hits): if you are on Ultra and verified, your mid-session stops should end — you can now work at your own pace within the weekly limit. If you are on Ultra and still hitting a five-hour cap, you are in the unverified holdout group: the limit lifts once verification completes, and Anthropic has not published what verification takes or how long it runs. Do not upgrade, downgrade, or re-budget on the assumption that the cap is already gone for you — check your own account first.
If you're a light Max user paying for headroom: nothing changes for you, and the rename clarifies what you were actually buying. Max was never "5x" in one number — it is 5x in both windows, and it stays that way. If the five-hour window is the limit you actually hit, Ultra is now the only plan that removes it; if the weekly cap is what you hit, Ultra doubles your volume for double the price, no better and no worse per unit.
If you run a team: Max and Ultra remain individual consumer plans; Anthropic directs organizations to separate Team and Enterprise offerings. The per-seat math in the table above is still the comparison to run, but do not mistake the $100/$200 API credits for team spend — each seat's credits belong to that seat's linked Console organization, and the credits do not convert a consumer seat into a team plan.
Open gaps: Anthropic has not said how long verification takes, what factors beyond account and payment history count, or which existing subscribers fall outside "most." The pricing page notes additional weekly, monthly, model, or feature limits may still apply. And the credits' rollover rules remain unpublished — model them as monthly use-it-or-lose-it until Anthropic says otherwise.
